What are E numbers? A guide to food additives
Codes such as E330 or E471 on packaged food labels are the numbers of approved food additives. 6,381 of the 11,663 packaged products in the Besin database contain at least one additive with an E number. Below you can read what the most common ones do, where they come from and how they were officially evaluated, and at the bottom you will find every E number we found in products.

How are E numbers grouped?
The numbers are broadly grouped by what the substance does. This is a tendency, not a strict rule; some substances have more than one function.
- E100–E199
- Colours
- E200–E299
- Preservatives and some acids
- E300–E399
- Antioxidants and acidity regulators
- E400–E499
- Thickeners, stabilisers, emulsifiers
- E500–E599
- Acidity regulators, raising agents, anti-caking agents
- E600–E699
- Flavour enhancers
- E900–E999
- Glazing agents, gases and sweeteners
- E1000 and up
- Modified starches, enzymes and others
Frequently asked questions
What does an E number mean?
An E number is the number of a food additive that has been evaluated and approved in the European Union. Türkiye uses the same numbers. On the label an additive is written with its function, either by name or by number; for example "acidity regulator (citric acid)" or "acidity regulator (E330)".
Is everything with an E number artificial?
No. An E number does not say whether a substance is natural or artificial, only that it was evaluated and approved as an additive. E300 ascorbic acid is vitamin C, E440 pectin comes from fruit, and E410 locust bean gum comes from the seed of a tree.
How can I find out which additives a product contains?
Read the product's ingredient list, or search for the product or scan its barcode in Besin App. The app lists the ingredients one by one and explains what each additive is.
What does ADI mean?
The ADI (acceptable daily intake) is the amount of a substance estimated to be safe to take every day over a lifetime, given per kilogram of body weight. For some substances the evaluating bodies see no need for a numerical ADI.
